The Charter of Freelance Rights
Die Europäische Journalisten-Föderation (der DJV ist dort Mitglied) veranstaltet am 5. Februar ein Webinar zum Thema Mindeststandards für den Umgang mit freien Journalisten. Die Seminarsprache ist Englisch.
THE CHARTER of Freelance Rights produced by the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) opens by stating that “Freelances are the most vulnerable workers in the media sector”. It covers the right to join a trade union, to a written contract, to authors’ rights, to the same professional rights as an employee. It specifically calls for “fake or forced freelances” – given freelance status just to save a media group money – to have the same rights and benefits as employees. The Charter demands “decent fees” that do not “undermine the positions of staff through providing cheap work”. The full text is here.
The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) is offering this online seminar (webinar) as a part of its activities to improve the situation of freelance journalists.
The seven paragraphs of the Charter of Freelance Rights will be elaborated with a discussion of best (and bad) practice in EFJ member organizations. Heikki Jokinen, freelance journalist from Finland will contribute on best practice regarding authors’ rights and collective agreements.
